😳Is your child with special needs limping after a fall 🤔 Wondering if you need to take your child to the doctor’s or just watch and see

It’s not uncommon for children to trip and fall over while playing or running, and most of the time, they are able to pick themselves up and dust themselves off without any major injuries. 😓However, there are times when falls can result in serious injuries like a broken bone or torn ligaments or head injuries.

If your child is able to verbalise what and where hurts from the fall, it makes life easier for parents when determining whether or not to go to the hospital or to simply manage the injury at home. 😬When a child has special needs and is non verbal, then it becomes more challenging to determine if your child has sustained a significant injury requiring medical attention.

Recently, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists🤓 while treating a little one with special needs, noticed that their older sibling with Autism was limping to get across the room. On questioning, their parent reported that the older sibling was playing on a flying fox playground equipment on the weekend, had lost her grip and fell down awkwardly onto her feet. The child cried initially and then settled soon after. However, she was limping after the fall and cried throughout the night unable to sleep. The child has limited speech and language skills so it was difficult for her to articulate what was upsetting her. The mother reported that the child is walking better now compared to 2 days ago, although she is still limping.

Our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists advised that the child should have an X-ray of her ankles to rule out any fractures or ligament damage from the fall that was causing her to continue to limp 2 days later. The family took the child for an X-ray and it was found that she has a broken bone, accounting for her limping! 🥺
