Success Story: Walking Independently In Time For School Been told that our child with Special Needs may never walk Been told that your child with Special Needs will need a wheelchair when they go to school

If you answered yes to the above statements, then you are not alone!
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists see many children with Special Needs each day, many little ones first come to our clinic at 6 months old when they have been diagnosed with hypotonia or developmental delay. Miss A was one of these little ones who came to see us at 10 months old. Her parents were informed that she has hypotonia because she was very floppy at 10 months, unable to hold her head up, unable to roll unable sit with her head up when supported and unable to put weight through her feet to stand supported. Her medical team could not find a cause for her low muscle tone and developmental delay, but they predicted that she may never be able to walk or talk.

When we first met Miss A with her parents, we carried out a full assessment on her gross motor skills and discussed what her parents would to see her achieve in terms of her gross motor skills. We set the goal to achieve independent walking with aids by 3 years old and then to progress to walking independently without aids by the time she is 5 years old as a long term goal. To help her improve her head control and core muscle strength so that she could learn to roll, sit and pull to stand, we recommended that Miss A commenced on twice weekly Intensive Early Intervention Physiotherapy. Over the years her parents remained steadfast in their commitment to attend Physiotherapy twice a week, and we are now excited to share that Miss A is actually walking without aids independently at 5 years old!
