13 Oct 🥴Have you noticed that your child with Cerebral Palsy is starting to develop a curved spine 🤔Wondering what can you do to prevent your child with Cerebral Palsy from developing neurological scoliosis
🧒Neurological scoliosis is a type of scoliosis that is associated with neurological conditions. Scoliosis itself refers to an abnormal curvature of the spine. Neurological scoliosis occurs when there is a neurological issue that affects the muscles supporting the spine, leading to an asymmetrical or abnormal curvature. Neurological conditions that can be associated with neurological scoliosis include Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Neuromuscular Diseases and Spina Bifida.
The neurological component of a condition can affect the muscles that support the spine, leading to an imbalance and curvature. This can result in both structural and functional problems, potentially impacting mobility and posture.
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓believe that prevention is better than cure when it comes to neurological scoliosis, and we are often closely monitoring each child’s spine development and proactively correcting muscle imbalances and managing spine using a variety of strategies including:
1. Core muscle strengthening to improve trunk and lower back muscle strength to improve posture at rest and when walking,
2. Radial Shockwave Therapy to reduce muscle tightness and muscle imbalance in the trunk, arms and legs,
3. Customised Dynamic Garment Orthosis to improve static and dynamic posture,
4. Customised Orthotics to correct foot posture and leg length discrepancies,
5. Functional Electrical Stimulation to correct muscle activation when performing functional activities.
To find out if your child with Cerebral Palsy could benefit from the above strategies to prevent or reduce their neurological scoliosis, reach out to My Favourite Physio 📱on (02) 9790 4233 or DM us @myfavouritephysio to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists today! 🤓
