04 Nov Is your child complaining of pain in their heels when they go for a long walk 🚶♀️
Perhaps you have noticed that your child is limping at the end of an active day because of heel pain 😣
Heel Pain in children aged 8 to 14 years old can often be an indication of ‘Sever’s Disease’.
Sever’s Disease is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel of children. During a growth spurt, a child’s bones 🦴 grow faster than the muscles, 🦵which means that muscles become relatively tighter as they stretch from joint to joint along the bone. In the case of Sever’s Disease, the calf muscles and Achilles tendon can’t keep up the bone growth in the shin bone and become tight. They then pull on the heel bone at the growth plate, causing inflammation and pain in the heel.😣
Sports and particularly those involving running and jumping, like basketball 🏀and soccer ⚽️ causes the calf muscles to work harder which pulls more on the heel bone, causing increased inflammation and pain in the growth plate in the heel. This is why your child complains of heel pain after sports or and active day, but the pain settles with rest.
Symptoms of Sever’s Disease include:
– Pain in the back of one or both heels
– Pain worse after activity and sport
– Tenderness and swelling in the back of the heel
