If you answered yes to any of the 3 statements above, then you are not alone! About 19% of the population experiences knee pain that affects their daily activities of living. Knee pain is more common in women than men, with the incidence and severity knee pain increasing with age.
The most common causes of knee pain are:
1. Ligament strains and sprains – this is the often related to twisting injury at sports or tripping over and falling awkwardly on the side of your knee.
2. Osteoarthritis – this is a wear and tear of the knee joints more common in the older adults.
3.Overuse syndromes – tendinitis, bursitis, which refer to inflammation of the tendon and bursa (fluid filled bags that reduce friction) respecively. Wear and tear can damage these structures and cause inflammation.
4. Fractures around the knee – this is often related to trauma where the knee cap and knee bone break due to a hit impact fall.
5. Referred pain from the hip, thigh bone, or lower back – pain from the hip joint or lower back often changes the way you walk which places more stress on the knee joint leading to knee pain.
