10 Dec Are you wondering if you should be wearing a knee brace for your knee pain
Been told that bracing isn’t good because you can become dependent on it and your knee will become weaker
Did your doctor tell you to exercise to lose weight and stop your knee pain, but your knee pain is stopping you from exercising
If you are confused about when to use a knee brace or not, then you are not alone. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists see many people with knee pain and one common question they have is “Do I need a Knee Brace?” followed by ” What type of Knee Brace should I get?”
Knee Braces help with providing support to the knee joint as well as to reduce swelling in the knee. So if you have knee pain and swelling that is preventing you from walking comfortably, then you may find that a Knee Brace is helpful for your knee pain.
There are many different types of Knee Braces and depending on the cause of your Knee Pain, some Knee Braces may be better than others for you. Some Knee Braces stop your knee form bending and straightening too much, while some Knee Braces control the position of your kneecap to stop it from sliding side to side when you bend your knee, and others provide support to improve your performance during sports. To determine which type of Knee Brace is best for your Knee Pain, it is best to consult an Expert Physiotherapist who will be able to correctly assess and advise you on how to treat and manage your Knee Pain.
The key to choosing the right Knee Brace is also includes knowing when and how to use it. Knee Braces should only be one aspect of your Rehabilitation for your Knee Pain. Knee Braces will not be able to resolve your Knee Pain, as often there are underlying muscle tightness, inflammation, muscle imbalance and joint dysfunction that needs to be addressed to overcome the Knee Pain.
