Are you concerned about your little one, worried that they might have something wrong
Are you busy Googling wondering if any of your child’s movements or behaviours fit into those conditions that you have Googled
Here at My Favourite Physio, it is not uncommon for our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists to meet families who come into our clinic with anxiety about their child’s development or behaviours based on what “Dr Google” told them. Recently, one such family came in with their 5 month old baby girl, because mum was concerned about her development and wanted to know where baby’s development was at the moment.
Mum reported that “baby does funny things”, she twirls her fingers when she gets a bit excited, she is not yet rolling and crawling like other babies. When our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist carried out a full developmental assessment on baby, she demonstrated gross motor skills which were well within the normal range, as she was on the 25th centile for her age. Baby did not demonstrate any odd behaviours that was atypical for her age. On chatting to the mum, it became apparent that mum’s fears were based on what she was reading on Google, and she was worried that baby had Cerebral Palsy or Autism or even Recessive Autism if she didn’t have Autism. We were able to discuss the signs and symptoms of these conditions and clarify for mum that the movements and behaviours she saw in her baby were actually normal for a baby of her age.
So instead of stressing and worrying at home based on what Dr Google says, if you are concerned about your baby’s movements or behaviours, it is best to see a Paediatrician or Paediatric Physiotherapist to have your baby assessed. Your first port of call should be your family doctor who can refer you to a Paediatrician rather than Dr Google. And if you would like to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists, ring My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233. We would be happy to chat with you and assess your baby if required to determine if baby is developing as expected for their age or not.
