A 2018 study demonstrated that Knee pain affects 25% of adults, and the prevalence has increased by 65% in the past 20 years. Many people with knee pain have a history of trauma preceding the knee pain, while in the older adult population, acute knee pain is often on top of chronic degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists often see people with acute knee injuries come in with swelling and pain in their knee. One of the treatment strategies that we use for knee pain and injuries is K-Tape.
K-Tape has several benefits for knee injuries at different stages of recovery and rehabilitation.
In the acute phase, K-Tape when properly applied, gently lifts the skin from the tissues below. This gentle lifting of the skin creates a space to improve blood and lymphatic flow which ultimately helps to reduce pressure in the knee joint and reduce swelling. Once blood flow is restored, oxygen and nutrients are better able to reach damaged tissues to help enhance healing. In the later stages, K-Tape when properly applied, provides dynamic support to the knee joint without restricting movement and performance. At the same time, still promoting increased blood flow to reduce post exercise delayed onset muscle soreness. The end result is a faster recovery and earlier return to active pain free living.
