Did you know the most common cause of shoulder pain is the poor movement or poor resting position of the shoulder blade
Here at My Favourite Physio when someone walks in with shoulder pain, the first thing our Expert Physiotherapists do is look at their shoulder blade position at rest and the quality of the movement of the shoulder blade when they lift their arms upwards, to the side and behind their backs. This is because for a majority of shoulder pain patients, a simple correction in the shoulder blade movement or position can instantaneously improve their shoulder pain symptoms.
For example on assessment, we may find that there is shoulder pain with lifting and lowering the arms down overhead. If we looked at the shoulder blade and found that it was not rotating upwards smoothly when lifting up the arm, we will manually correct the shoulder blade to rotate upwards when the patient lifts the arm up again. If the patient reports a reduction in shoulder pain immediately, it would confirm that the poor shoulder blade movement is the cause of their shoulder pain. We will then use a variety of manual therapy techniques to correct muscle imbalances around the shoulder joint and joint stiffness that is causing the poor shoulder blade movement. Once we are able to obtain free movement of the shoulder blade, we would provide an individualised Exercise Program to help you learn to correctly move your shoulder blade in all directions when moving your arm. Using this approach assess and treat shoulder pain, we are able to help many shoulder pain patients eliminate their shoulder pain permanently!
