Have a baby they said, it’ll be great! You’ll be a wonderful parent they say…. but no one ever said that Parenting is a tough gig
Parenting doesn’t come with an instructional manual and the experience is different for everyone and with every child.
When you are expecting baby, all you see are commercials of healthy happy babies sleeping sweetly…. no one tells you that babies might wake and cry every hour, no one said that baby might have low muscle tone and struggles to feed, no one said baby might have developmental delays and need early intervention, no one said that you would need to be brave and strong to help your baby learn to roll, sit, crawl, pull to stand and walk…. no one said that doing the best thing for your child can feel like your heart is breaking into a million pieces….
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists see many babies and children with various conditions ranging from Torticollis ( tight neck muscle), Plagiocephaly ( Mis-shapened head), Developmental Delay, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum Disorder and many rare genetic conditions. Often many of the little ones don’t yet speak so their only means of verbal communication is screaming and crying. This is distressing and challenging for parents, as it’s often a guessing game figuring out what they need and unfortunately the little ones learnt over time that if they cry, scream, hit and bite themselves or their parents, they will get what they want quickly.
To help the children learn new gross motor skills, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists often have to help parents manage the behavioural tantrums. This process is challenging for little ones and parents as everyone learns how to set boundaries and the new rules of engagement but very quickly the children learn to settle and start to move better. It isn’t easy but it’s always worth it when little one learns to walk.
