Ever feel like life isn’t fair and things don’t seem to go your way
Or Perhaps you feel like you drew the short straw in life, if only you had more resources and opportunities
Many years ago, at My Favourite Physio, we were very privileged to meet 31 year old Michael and share in his health journey. Michael was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) at 8 years old, and by 12 years old lost the ability to walk because of the progressive muscle loss as a result of DMD. However, that “slight hitch” didn’t stop Michael from being active and living a full life. He completed his Bachelor and Honours in Rehabilitation Counselling at the University of Sydney, played wheelchair rugby league, soccer and hockey for 14 years before becoming National Electric Wheelchair Sports Coach for 7 years. He was actively involved in grassroots activities promoting awareness of DMD and won many awards including including the 4 Roger Melynk Awards, 3 All Australian Coach Awards and the Australian Government Sports Achievement Award In 2004.
Michael was only 33 when he passed away as a result of the progression of DMD, the legacy he left behind is never forgotten. He has inspired many who came across his path and truly embodies the saying that “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.”
