Does your child complain of shoulder pain or reported clicking in the shoulder joint
It is not unusual for children who are training intensively for a sport like Gymnastics or Tennis or Cricket to report shoulder pain, tenderness or clicking because of the range of movement their shoulders have to move through in order to execute the specific skill for their sport. In addition, the intensity and frequency of practice in order to master the sport tends to place many children at risk of shoulder overuse injury.
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists often see young emerging athletes who compete nationally in Gymnastics, Tennis, Cricket, Rugby and Basketball to help them overcome their sports related injuries and return to playing at their peak performance. One common complaint that parents and child athletes report is that flexibility exercises that the coach has prescribed is causing shoulder pain and clicking in the shoulder. The reason for this is that often there is underlying tendon inflammation, muscle tightness and imbalance which is further aggravated with stretching the shoulder joint in flexibility exercises. So the solution to achieving more flexibility and movement in the shoulder joint is actually to first treat the underlying tendon inflammation, muscle tightness and imbalance before trying to stretch. There are many treatments options that we use in clinic at My Favourite Physio ranging from Radial Shockwave Therapy to Dynamic Taping, Soft Tissue Massage, and Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound to help overcome tendon and muscle inflammation.
