❄️Have you dressed your little ones in hoodies and scarves to fend off the Winter cold?😳Did you know that scarves🧣 and hoodies are strangulation hazards on playgrounds?

It’s Winter ❄️ and the biting cold means we are dressing little ones in beanies and scarves 🧣 to keep them warm. However, few parents realise that hoodies and scarves are strangulation hazards in playground equipment.
Although cases of accidental strangulation in children are rare, it unfortunately does happen. 😳

When accidental strangulation happens in playground equipment, it is often due to scarves 🧣being caught on playground equipment and it only takes minutes for such a situation to become fatal. Hoodies with strings that dangle off the hood is another strangulation hazard, particularly as young children climb and explore on playground equipment. Child Safety Expert Dani Morin states that “It takes 10 seconds for a child to strangle, to be unconscious, and then it takes another couple minutes for them to go brain dead.”😱

Recently, in a sad tragedy, 😢a 14 month old toddler died from accidental strangulation when she became entangled in a small backpack 🎒hanging on a hook in her own home. Other strangulation hazards in the home include curtain and blind cords.

To avoid strangulation hazards, remove your child’s scarf when they are at the playground and avoid having clothing with loose bits of strings like those on a hoodie top and capes that can get caught on playground equipment. At home, all curtain and blind cords should be secured to the wall. Keep all backpacks with straps that could be a strangulation risk out of reach of young children.

Together we can keep our children safe.😊 A Friendly reminder from your Expert Paediatric Physiotherapy Team at My Favourite Physio.
