16 Jun 3 Top Tips to promote your Premature Baby’s 👶🏻gross motor skills development
#1. Encourage a curled posture when handling baby.🤱
Premature babies have missed out on the final weeks or months of being curled up tightly in mummy’s tummy. This curled positioning, known as flexion posture, is important in the gross motor skill development for a child. Encourage your premature baby’s 👶🏻flexion pattern by carrying them as a curled ball in your arms, so that their arms and feet come to the midline, rather than holding them over your shoulder with their arms and legs outwards and backwards.
#2. Encourage tummy time and head control early.
Premature babies are usually smaller in birth weight than full term babies, 👶🏻 as
such their ability to actively lift their heads up against gravity is less than full
term babies. Encourage your premature baby to strengthen 💪their neck muscles and head control by placing them on your chest or on a fat pillow and encouraging them to look up at you, while you support their shoulder and keep their hips and knees tucked in under them.
#3. Encourage self-settling before you pick baby up.🤗
Premature babies can be more irritable than full terms babies when doing Physiotherapy Exercises because the exercises are more challenging for them due to their smaller birth weight and prematurity. One way to help settle baby when they become 😥upset and irritable is to help them to curl up with their arms and legs in midline and gently pat them, while calmly and softly saying, “it’s ok, you’re ok.”😊
