16 Jun Have you been told that a baby donut pillow can help prevent a flat head shape in your newborn baby 👶🏻😳Did you know that having baby sleep on any pillow increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)?
Many parents of newborns have been marketing products as such “the “baby donut pillow”,🍩 that are specially designed with an arc-shaped contour to help reduce the pressure on the back of your baby’s head and help prevent Deformational Plagiocephaly, also known as Flat Head Syndrome.”
However, there is no scientific medical evidence to date to support the effectiveness of baby donut pillows to prevent a flattened head shape. On the contrary, there is strong evidence to indicate that the use of head shaping pillows can create an unsafe sleep environment for infants and may contribute to the risk of suffocation and death.😱
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓 see many babies who present with a flattened head shape, and majority of the cases, the cause of a flat head shape is due to a tight neck muscle called Torticollis. The assessment, diagnosis and treatment of Torticollis should be carried out by an Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist. Donut Pillows and even helmets do not help correct the Torticollis and in fact, some babies have presented with worsening head shape after using a Baby Donut Pillow.
If you are concerned about your baby’s head shape, instead of using a Baby Donut Pillow, ring My Favourite Physio on 📱(02) 9790 4233 or DM us @myfavouritephysio to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists today! 🚀🚀🚀
