04 Aug 😳Have you noticed that your little one has overlapping toes? 🤔Wondering if your child’s overlapping toes are an issue that needs correcting?
👶🏻Overlapping toes in babies, also known as congenital overlapping toes, is a condition where one or more toes of a newborn appear to cross over or under adjacent toes. The exact cause of congenital overlapping toes is not always clear, but it may result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In some cases, it may be related to the position of the baby’s feet in the womb during development.
In many instances, congenital overlapping toes are a benign and self-resolving condition. As the baby grows and becomes more active, the toes often straighten out on their own, and the condition resolves without the need for treatment.
🥴However, if the overlapping toes persist or cause discomfort or difficulty in the baby’s movement, it’s essential to have baby assessed by an Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist.🤓 If required, conservative treatment can include taping, toe separators, stretches, exercises and orthotic footwear.
For little ones 👶🏻under 12 months old, stretches and K-Taping are most effective. Taping can gently guide the toes into a more appropriate position, helping to realign them. By separating the overlapping toes, taping can reduce the pressure and friction between them, providing relief and preventing skin problems. Consistent taping over a period may help the soft tissues and ligaments adapt, leading to improved toe alignment.
For little ones over 12 months old, orthotics shoes 👟and K-Taping are most effective.
