04 Aug 4th August 2023 is Jeans for Genes Day
1 in 20 kids faces a birth defect or genetic disease, like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and life-threatening metabolic disorders. That’s 12 kids born every minute worldwide.
Jeans for Genes Day is a fundraising initiative held in Australia each year. Jeans for Genes Day Australia focuses on birth defects or genetic diseases like Down syndrome, cancer, cystic fibrosis, and genetic blindness. Jeans for Genes Day was created in 1994 by Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI), it was the first organisation in Australia dedicated to improving children’s health through research, and they’ve led the world in this research for over 60 years. Today, CMRI is the site of world-leading research in areas such as cancer, neurobiology, embryology, genomics, and gene therapy.
The aim of Jeans for Genes Day is to increase awareness of genetic diseases and birth defects, and to raise money for more research for cures and medicinal support. The day encourages children and teachers to join in with fundraising by wearing jeans and casual wear to school. Those who participate by wearing jeans then donate money. Your support helps the scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute find cures, so kids with birth defects or genetic disease and millions more like them can go back to being kids.
