Is your child with special needs missing out when the family goes out on a bike ride? Wondering if it is possible for your child with special needs to learn to ride a bike?

Bike riding is a great form of cardiovascular exercise that helps children develop strong hearts and lungs. It also improves muscle strength and endurance, particularly in the legs. Riding a bike requires coordination between the hands, feet, and eyes. Balancing, pedalling, and steering all contribute to the development of fine and gross motor skills. Riding bikes with friends or family promotes social interaction and the development of interpersonal skills. It can also be a fun group activity. Learning to ride a bike gives children a sense of accomplishment and independence as they gain the ability to explore their surroundings on their own.

For children with special needs bike riding does not come easy. Trying to coordinate balance, pedalling and steering is an extremely challenging task. For children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida or other similar conditions, riding a two wheeler may never be a practical option. If you have a child with special needs you may want to consider an adaptive bike. There are many different types of adaptive bikes to suit every child’s needs, from simple modifications of pedals and handle bars to customised bike frames, tricycles, tandem bikes, adaptive seats and trunk supports.

Here At My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists are able to help your child with accessing adaptive bikes so that they can learn to ride a bike and participate with the rest of the family socially.
