25 Aug 🥴Is your toddler 2 years old and still not yet walking 😳 Have you been told that your toddler seems to walk funny 🤔 Wondering is there something wrong with your toddler’s hips?
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hips (DDH), also commonly referred to as “Clicky Hips”, is a condition whereby the hip joint does not develop properly in infants 👶🏻and young children. In a normal hip joint, the ball-shaped head of the femur (thigh bone) fits snugly into the cup-shaped socket of the pelvis (acetabulum). In DDH, this relationship is disrupted, leading to instability or dislocation of the hip joint. DDH can range from mild to severe and can affect one or both hips.
👶🏻The incidence of DDH is approximately 1 in 100 live births screened clinically, and up to 8 in 100 infants screened by ultrasound. The risk factors for DDH is female gender, breech presentation, a first-degree relative with DDH, fixed foot deformities, first born child and oligohydramnios. However, in 60% of infants with DDH these risk factors are absent.😬
3 Late Signs of DDH are;
1. Clunking in the hip joints.
If you notice a clunking or clicking in your toddler’s hip joints whenever you bend your child’s hips up or out to clean them for a nappy change, it may be an indication that your child’s hip joint is actually dislocating in and out of the socket.
2. Reduced hip range of motion.
If you notice that your toddler is not able to open their hips out completely to sit comfortable cross legged on the floor, or you are unable to open their hips out to clean their groin easier at nappy change, it may be an indication that your child’s hip joints are not well formed.
3. Waddling.
If you notice that your toddler is walking with a waddle where they seem to lurch side to side to swing their leg forward, it may be an indication that your child has DDH.
