15 Sep 😬Been told that your child with Down Syndrome will be delayed compared to other typically developing children? 🤔Wondering if your child with Down Syndrome will walk before 4 years old?
📚A 2003 study stated that “the average age for walking in typically developing children is 13 months and the range is 9-17 months, while the average age for walking in children with Down syndrome is 24 months and the range is 13-48 months.” Yet here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists refuse 🙅♀️to accept that statistic as the norm for children with Down Syndrome.
Instead, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist 🤓prefer to believe the principle of brain plasticity. 🧠Brain plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity or neural plasticity, refers to the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt and change throughout a person’s life. It is the brain’s capacity to reorganize its structure, functions, and connections in response to various experiences, learning, and environmental influences. Some aspects of brain plasticity are more pronounced during critical periods of development, such as early childhood, when the brain is particularly malleable. During these critical periods, the brain is highly responsive to sensory inputs and experiences, making it an optimal time for learning and skill development. 👶🏻
Using the principle of brain plasticity, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists are able to help babies with Down Syndrome learn to roll, sit, crawl, pull to stand and walk at the same age as typically developing children. Here at My Favourite Physio, when we see a baby with Down Syndrome at 3-4 months old, we are able to help them achieve independent walking by 18 months old. 😊
