🥴Is your child’s arm and hand function affected by Cerebral Palsy? 😳Does your child with Cerebral Palsy struggle to lift their wrist and open their palms to grasp items? 🤔Wondering is there anything that can be done to help your child improve their arm and hand function?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder 🧠that primarily affects muscle control and coordination, and it can impact various parts of the body, including the arms. The specific way CP affects the arms can vary widely from person to person and depends on the location and extent of brain damage or abnormalities. The most common form of CP is Spastic Cerebral Palsy and when the arm is affected, CP can restrict the range of movement in the arm making it difficult for individuals to fully extend or flex their elbows, shoulders, or wrists. 😬

Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists use 3 Strategies to help correct and improve the range of motion and function in the arm and hand for children with Cerebral Palsy.

💪Strategy #1: Reduce Spasticity
Radial Shockwave Therapy to the shoulder, forearm and hand muscles to reduce muscle spasticity and allow increased range of movement in the the arm.

💪Strategy #2: Increase Muscle Length
Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound to the long finger extensors to reduce muscle and tendon tightness in the elbow, wrist and hand. This would allow the hands to open up, the wrist to turn to bring the palm face up and to extend the wrist for functional grasp.

💪Strategy #3: Increase Functional Use
Dynamic splinting using K-Tape and Dynamic Garment Orthosis allows the shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers to be placed into neutral positions to allow active functional grasp. This encourages more functional use of the arm and hand.

Using the above 3 strategies, we successfully help many little ones with Cerebral Palsy improve their arm and hand function. 👋So if you are concerned about your child’s shoulder and arm function, ring My Favourite Physio 📱on (02) 9790 4233 or DM us @myfavouritephysio to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓today!
