13 Oct 😬Been told that your child has developmental delay but you don’t agree with the assessment? 🤔Are you looking for a second opinion or third opinion to reassure yourself that the first assessment of developmental delay is incorrect?
👧According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it’s estimated that globally, about 15% of children aged 0-19 experience some form of developmental delay. Developmental delay refers to a significant lag or slower rate of development in one or more areas of a child’s development compared to what is considered typical for their age. This includes delays in motor skills, cognitive development, communication, and social skills.
Diagnosis of developmental delay typically involves a developmental assessment by Peadiatricians 👨⚕️or Developmental Peadiatricians or Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapists 🤓or Speech Therapists. They use standardised tools and evaluations to assess a child’s development and compare it to age-appropriate milestones. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists carry out specific gross motor skills assessments using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) for children 0 to 19 months old. This assessment is based on baby’s ability to move when on their tummy, when on their back, when in sitting and in standing. From the assessment, we are able to determine if a child is performing their gross motor skills as expected for their age. 🥴
Sometimes, parents become upset 🥺when told that the AIMS assessment indicates that their child has gross motor skills delay, and they decide that they would seek a second opinion. Eventually, they may find someone who will tell them what they want to hear. However, although a parent may feel better that someone says their child isn’t delayed, reality is the child will then miss out on crucial Early Intervention to help them learn to move better. The key to overcoming developmental delay is Early Intervention!🔑
