20 Oct 😳 Have you noticed that your baby is always turning their head to one side 😓 Have you attempted neck stretches on your baby based on YouTube videos, only to find that baby is screaming and resisting the stretch
The most common reason why a baby tends to prefer looking to one side is a condition called Torticollis. This is a condition whereby baby was born with a tight neck muscle, the Sternocleidomastoid muscle, causing restrictions to baby’s ability to turn equally both ways. Torticollis is a condition that can be easily corrected with Early Intervention Paediatric Physiotherapy. Because Torticollis can present in a variety of ways and no two baby will be exactly the same, it is important to see an Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist to have your baby assessed and treated appropriately.
One of the common mistakes our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists see is, parents have tried to stretch their baby’s neck muscles while copying videos they have watched on YouTube or photos they have on Google. This usually results in baby becoming distressed and screaming until the parents stop the stretches. And by the time parents bring their baby to My Favourite Physio, baby is often traumatised which makes assessing baby more challenging. It also then takes more Physiotherapy sessions to settle baby and train baby to tolerate any touch on their head or neck muscles.
So if you have noticed that your baby is preferring to look to one side or has a head tilt to one side, instead of trying to stretch baby’s neck muscles based on YouTube videos, reach out to My Favourite Physio on (02) 9790 4233 or Dm us @myfavouritephysio to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists today!
