Typically developing babies should not 🙅hold their head at a tilt, if they do, it is often because of a tight neck muscle called the Sternocleidomastoid muscle. Babies with a tight Sternocleidomastoid muscle will often present with a preference to turn to one side more than the other, hold their head at a tilt and eventually develop a mis-shapened head. For some babies,👶🏻 their head tilt or head preference is very obvious, while for some babies, it can be more subtle. It is the subtle cases, where we find mothers will notice but “no one else” would see it.
For the mums who can see their babies subtle head tilt or head preference, the journey to finding someone who will understand what they are seeing or even be willing to listen to their concerns can be very challenging.
