19 Dec 😳 Have you been told that your child with Down Syndrome will not walk before 3-4 years old because they have low muscle tone 😣 Been told that a child with Down Syndrome will have cognitive impairments as well as speech and language delays so they will need to attend a Special Needs School
👶🏻Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. Between 2016 and 2020, there were an estimated 265 births of babies with Down syndrome per year. This means around 1 in every 1,158 babies born in Australia will have Down syndrome.
Amongst children with Down syndrome, a 2017 Down Syndrome Australia survey found:
👧46% of students were attending mainstream schools;
🧒46% were attending special schools or a special unit within mainstream school;
👦the remaining 8% were in other settings including mixes of mainstream school/special school.
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓 believe that with Effective Paediatric Physiotherapy Early Intervention, we are able to help little ones with Down Syndrome achieve their gross motor skills milestones at the same time as typically developing children. All of the little ones who attend My Favourite Physio from the age of 3 months old, have achieved independently walking without aids at 16 to 18 months old. 💪Many of the little ones we see in our clinic as babies have gone onto attending Kindy in mainstream schools. Children with Down Syndrome have the potential to live fruitful productive independent lives, all they need is a great head start in life with effective intensive early intervention support for their gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech and language skills.
