22 Dec 😳Is your little one with special needs struggling to feed and hence is not gaining weight as expected 🥴Have you been told that your child will need a feeding tube to help your child receive sufficient nutrition to grow, but the thought of a feeding tube is overwhelming for you
A feeding tube for a baby 👶🏻is a medical device used to deliver nutrition directly into the stomach or small intestine when a baby is unable to feed orally or is having difficulty doing so. There are different types of feeding tubes, but they generally involve a tube that is inserted through the nose or mouth and passed down the esophagus into the stomach or small intestine.
Feeding tubes are used for various reasons, including for premature babies who may not have developed the coordination or strength to suck and swallow effectively, babies with congenital abnormalities, neurological issues, or gastrointestinal problems which makes feeding orally difficult. Babies who are not gaining weight adequately through oral feeding may require additional nutritional support through a feeding tube. As well as babies with certain respiratory conditions may be at risk of aspirating milk or formula into their lungs, and a feeding tube can help bypass the oral route.
It is understandable that parents will feel overwhelmed at the thought of a feeding tube, however, the benefits of a feeding tube are
👶🏻1. Ensuring baby has sufficient nutrition to grow physically and developmentally because our muscles and brain need nutrition to develop;
👶🏻2. Ensure baby has energy to stay awake to exercise and play so they can grow stronger and learn new skills, and
👶🏻3. Ensure baby has immunity to resist illness.
