12 Jan 🎄Christmas is the season to be jolly, but did you know that the Christmas season is also the season for increased injuries 😬
Every year thousands of Australians end up in the emergency departments due to Christmas-related injuries. in a recent study on Emergency Department presentations over the Christmas and New Year season, it was found that for Christmas-related injuries, the highest number of ED presentations were in children aged 0-9 years (30%). 😱The majority of all injuries were fall-related (including from bikes, trampolines, hoverboards, ladders, skateboards), while others included being injured at a party function (5%), cuts related to serving food (3%), cuts from Christmas decorations or ornaments (8%), and falling Christmas trees (3%). Sixty-seven per cent of injuries from 🎄Christmas decorations or ornaments were also among young children aged 0-9 years – from general cuts to injuries when children place them in their mouth.
So this Christmas and New Year’s season, here’s some keys to ensuring your little stays safe and injury free:
1. Only have one child at a time on the trampoline,
2. Always have a responsible adult supervise pool activities;
3. Hang Christmas tree ornaments higher up on the tree and away from little ones who can reach them and try to eat them;
4. Do not hold hot drinks when around children and
5. Keep all hot drinks, pots and pans containing hot food away from the edge of the table.
With a little extra vigilance, we can keep our little ones safe this holiday season!
