19 Jan 🥴Does your child W-sit all the time? 😬Struggling to correct your childâs W-sitting? 🤔Wondering whatâs wrong with W-sitting anyway?
âW-sittingâ is a sitting posture where a child sits on their bottom with their knees bent and feet positioned outside their hips, forming a W shape. 🥴 W-sitting is considered an maladaptive sitting posture, as it tends to negatively impact a childâs development and posture.
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓 recommends that children are discouraged from W-sitting for the following reasons:
😬1. W-sitting tends to affect childrenâs hip joint development because the thigh bone is turned in and directed outwards in the hip joint.
😬2. W-sitting tends to cause muscle tightness in the leg and hip muscles which affects the posture and development of the hip, knee, ankle and foot bones.
😬3. W-sitting tends to cause children to crawl with their legs in the same W-sitting posture, their hips turned in and lower legs turned out.
😬4. W-sitting tends to cause children to walk with their legs in the same W-sitting posture. Children tend to walk with knocked knees and duck footed posture.
😬5. W-sitting tends to cause children to be delayed in their gross motor skills as children are less coordinated when they sit, crawl and walk with their hips turned in and feet turned in.
So if you noticed your child is W-sitting, discourage them by encouraging sitting on a low stool or cross leg sitting.
