09 Feb 😳 Are you worried about damaging baby’s neck and back muscles so you aren’t doing tummy time with baby 🤔Or perhaps you have been old that babies should do tummy time to help strengthen their neck muscles and improve head control, but you are thinking of doing it when baby is 6 months old.
👶🏻Babies need tummy time for several important reasons, all of which contribute to their physical and developmental health. Tummy time refers to placing a baby on their stomach to play while they are awake and supervised. This “simple activity” is important because:
1. Tummy time helps babies strengthen their neck and shoulder muscles. These muscles are important for lifting the head, crawling, and reaching milestones including rolling over, sitting up, and eventually crawling and walking.
2. Spending time on their tummy can prevent babies from developing flat spots on their heads, which can occur when babies spend too much time lying on their backs.
3. Tummy time gives babies a different perspective on their surroundings, helping to stimulate their senses and promote sensory processing skills. It encourages them to explore their environment in new ways, which is important for cognitive development.
4. Tummy time can help develop visual and eye coordination skills. Babies learn to track moving objects and focus on faces or toys, which is important for their visual development.
5. For some babies, lying on their tummy can help with digestion and ease discomfort from gas.
