😳 Are you hesitant to start your baby on solids because you are worried that baby will choke on solids 🤔 Perhaps your baby did start solids at 6 months old, but you’re not sure when to move from smooth puree to lumpy solids

Introducing solid foods to your baby is an important milestone in their development and nutrition. The general recommendation is to start introducing solids around 6 months of age, but it’s important to also consider your baby’s readiness.

3 signs that indicate baby is ready to try solids are;
👶🏻1. Your baby should be able to hold their head up steadily and sit up with minimal support. This is important to reduce the risk of choking.
😋2. Your baby is showing interest in what you’re eating, reaching for your food, or opening their mouth when food comes their way.
😊3. Your baby can move food to the back of their mouth and swallow it instead of letting it dribble out.

Once baby starts on puree, over time, baby should progress to lumpier solids. Moving from smooth purees to lumpier solids is an important step in your baby’s eating development, helping them learn how to chew, swallow more textured foods, and eventually eat the same foods as the rest of the family. This transition usually starts after your baby has gotten used to eating smooth purees, typically around the age of 6 to 9 months. However, the timing can vary for each baby depending on their readiness and developmental pace.

Your baby is ready to progress to lumpier solids when they:
💪1. Show good head and neck control and can sit up with little or no support.
😋2. Opens their mouth when they see food coming.
😛3. Moves their jaw up and down in a chewing motion, even if they don’t have teeth yet.
🤗4. Seems interested in what you’re eating and may try to grab food from your plate.
😊5. Can manage smooth purees easily, without gagging or pushing the food out of their mouth with their tongue.
