Scoliosis is a medical condition characterised by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine causing the spine to curve in an “S” or “C” shape rather than being straight. The severity of the curve can vary widely among individuals; minor curves may cause few issues, while severe cases can lead to discomfort, reduced mobility, and even impact lung and heart function.
Scoliosis in children with cerebral palsy (CP) is not uncommon, given that CP involves motor disabilities that can affect muscle tone, posture, and balance. The prevalence and severity of scoliosis in children with cerebral palsy can vary widely, depending on the level of motor impairment, with higher rates observed in those who are nonambulatory. Cerebral palsy-related scoliosis develops as a result of imbalanced muscle forces around the spine. Children with CP may have muscle groups that are unusually tight or spastic, pulling the spine into a curved position. Over time, as the child grows, these imbalances can lead to a progressive curvature of the spine.
Management and treatment of scoliosis in children with CP are tailored to the individual’s needs and the severity of the curve. Options may include for mild cases, regular check-ups with a specialist to monitor the curve’s progression. Physiotherapy intervention involving specific exercises may help in managing symptoms or slowing progression, focusing on strengthening and stretching exercises to improve posture and balance. Orthotic Devices such as bracing might be used in some cases to help control the progression of the curve, although its effectiveness can vary depending on the type and severity of scoliosis and CP. Surgery is generally considered when the curvature is severe, progresses rapidly, or when it begins to cause functional problems or pain.
