05 Apr 😮💨Is your child experiencing more asthma attacks with the change of weather? 😬Have you been told that you child needs to use Ventolin for their asthma attacks?
Asthma is a common long-term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs, characterised by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and easily triggered bronchospasms. Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. These symptoms may occur a few times a day or a few times per week. Depending on the child, asthma symptoms may become worse at night or with exercise.
Management of asthma involves avoiding triggers and using medications like ventolin, which is a bronchodilator to open up the airways, allowing for fast relief during an acute asthma attack. One common mistake that parents make when administering Ventolin inhalers, is they do not use a spacer.
Every child should be using a spacer with their Ventolin inhalers because a spacer helps to ensure that more of the medication reaches the lungs rather than being deposited in the mouth or the back of the throat. This ensures that finer particles of Ventolin can reach deeper into the lungs, leading to better asthma control. By minimising the amount of medication that deposits in the mouth and throat, spacers reduce the risk of side effects like oral thrush (a fungal infection) and hoarseness. This is particularly important for medications that contain corticosteroids, like Pulmicort and Symbicort. Children often find it difficult to coordinate pressing the inhaler and inhaling the medication at the exact same time. A spacer holds the medication in a chamber, allowing the child to inhale it more slowly and at their own pace, ensuring better delivery of the medication to the lungs.
So if your child is not using a spacer with their inhalers, it is important to start doing so now.
