Too often in society, the language used when
 speaking to parents and children with special needs is one of deficits and negativity. At medical assessment clinics, in childcare centres admissions, in school enrolments processes, in therapy registration forms and National Disability Insurance Scheme registration processes and reviews the language used is often focused on what a child with special needs can’t do or a tick box 
 list of expected Developmental milestones which parent often answer No to. Although these assessments and registration processes are essential to determine a child’s needs so as to allow facilities and services to be able to cater to a their needs, the way questions are asked to collect information doesn’t have to be one of deficit or negativity.
Children with special needs have so many strengths 
and abilities which are often overlooked. Here at My Favourite Physio, we have had the wonderful opportunity to share the journey with many families and children with special needs, and some of the questions we ask parents on our first meeting are:

What would you like to see your child achieve? 
This allows families to focus on the abilities and strengths of their child as well as positive goals to work towards. Children 
with special needs have unique skills and beautiful personalities just like any other typically developing child.
