😣 Have you been told that your baby has Torticollis causing their head tilt and misshapen head? 🤔Been having therapy to treat your baby’s Torticollis but you’re not seeing any improvements?

Torticollis refers to the tight sternocleidomastoid muscle in baby’s neck which results in baby having a head tilt and preference to look to one side more than the other. As a result of Torticollis, baby tends to develop a misshapen head over time because baby lies on one side of their head most of the time.

😳😳😳 3 Common Mistakes we find when babies present to My Favourite Physio with Torticollis:

1. Baby’s head tilt is misdiagnosed as an “lazy eye”. So parents are advised to patch baby’s eye for 4-8 hours a day for 3 months to see if baby’s head tilt will improve. Although some babies may have a “lazy eye”, many in reality have a tight neck muscle that is causing their head tilt. As a result, some babies are trialling eye patches until they are 9 to 18 months old before they present to a Paediatric Physiotherapist to have the correct treatment for their Torticollis.

2. Baby’s head tilt is misdiagnosed as a misshapen head. So parents are advised to do Helmet Therapy with baby. Helmet Therapy requires baby to wear a customised helmet for 23 hours out of 24 hours a day for several months. Often a helmet actually limits baby’s neck movements further, causing more head tilt or preference to look to one side. When Helmet Therapy is stopped, baby continues to have a head tilt.

3. Parents have been told that baby will grow out of their head tilt, and so they just have to wait and watch their baby improve over time. Left untreated, Torticollis can get worse, because baby’s tight neck muscle is not being stretched to accommodate baby’s growth in height. So over time, the tight muscle pulls more on baby’s head resulting in worsening head tilt over time.
