01 Mar 🥺Are you concerned that your child with Cerebral Palsy will not be able to sit independently 🤔Wondering what can you do to help your child learn to sit
Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term for a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. It is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture. This damage usually occurs before, during, or shortly after birth, and it affects brain function related to controlling muscles and motor activity. The signs and symptoms of Cerebral Palsy vary among children and over time, and the severity of symptoms varies widely with some children experiencing mild difficulty with movement, while others may have severe motor disabilities and require lifelong care. Other complications can include intellectual disabilities, seizures, problems with vision or hearing, and abnormalities in speech. Muscle stiffness or floppiness, poor coordination, tremors, and involuntary movements are common motor symptoms.
There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but Early Intervention Paediatric Physiotherapy can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists see many children with Cerebral Palsy to help them learn to move better. One of the gross motor skill milestones that parents want to see their child with Cerebral Palsy achieve is sitting.
To help a child learn to sit, we work on 3 key principles:
1. Increase core strength and head control through Tummy Time and specific core exercises using a gymball.
2. Decrease adaptive movement such as arching or hyperextension of the spine.
3. Encourage movement by assisting a child with manual guidance to move.
Every child with Cerebral Palsy will present differently and it is crucial that therapy programs are designed specifically to cater to each child’s needs.
