16 Nov Experiencing sharp shooting pain in your wrist
Been told that you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Did you know that Physiotherapy can help carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition whereby the median nerve is compressed in the wrist region. It produces symptoms such as numbness, tingling and pain from the forearm, wrist and hand region. Commonly, people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome often report that sleep is disrupted by pain and numbness in the hands, because during the night the wrist is often bent putting increased pressure in the median nerve and wrist compartment. Some people wake 4 to 5 times a night from hand pain and numbness, which is relieved by straightening and shaking their hands “loose”.
Compression of the median nerve in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is likely to happen when there is increased pressure within the wrist space. This can occur with swelling around or in the wrist, with prolonged time spent with the wrist in a bent position, or prolonged positions of pressure or weight directly on the wrist. Activities performed in weight bearing such as push ups or yoga, may also cause compression. Additionally, repetitive tasks such as forceful gripping and bending the wrist, for example when lifting bar weights for chest press or using tools like a wrench , may result in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
