03 Nov Is your child with special needs often screaming 😭and throwing tantrums when she doesnât get her way 😳
Are you struggling to get your child with developmental delay to cooperate at therapy or at home 🥴Is your toddler with special needs screaming,😤 hitting and biting themselves or others when they are told âNo.â😳
If you answered yes to any of the above statements, rest assured, you are not alone.
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓see many babies 👶🏻 and children with special needs and developmental delay who are often nonverbal. The goal of Paediatric Physiotherapy is to help the child learn to roll, sit, crawl, pull to stand, walk, run 🏃🏼♀️ , hop, skip and jump. As with learning any new skills, these activities are challenging and itâs not uncommon that babies and children will protest 😫at having to participate in therapy.
The challenge is that some babies and children have learned with experience that if they cry 😢 they will get what they want and that the louder and harder they 😭cry, the faster they get what they want. The root cause of this problem is often because parents think a child with special needs or developmental delay is unable to understand what is happening, so they don’t set boundaries, inadvertently teaching a child that they donât have to follow any instructions or do anything they feel is challenging. The result is a child who has temper tantrums can escalated as they get older. And the older and bigger a child is, the harder it is to retrain their behaviours. 😳Some children resist learning to crawl or walk but are physically tall and big which means that they end up needing a wheelchair to be transported.
Behavioural tantrums at a young age can negatively impact a child with special needs in terms of their gross motor skills and functional outcomes.😳 To stop that from happening to your child with special needs, start by setting boundaries for the right behaviours.
