Sciatica

Sciatica is defined as pain caused by pressure or irritation of the sciatic nerve. It can cause pain anywhere along the sciatic nerve from the lower back to the sole of the foot. It can also cause changes in sensation and muscle power of the leg. Sciatica has been reported to occur in 1 to 10% of the population, most commonly in people age 25 to 45 years. Sciatica can begin suddenly and symptoms may be intermittent or constant. There are many different causes of sciatica and the symptoms that each person will experience will be different. Sciatica can be very debilitating for the person experiencing constant ache and sudden sharp pains when they are sitting or lying with pressure on the buttocks. Sciatica can limit your ability to participate in work and life as you struggle to stay seated or standing in the same position for prolonged periods. If you are suffering with sciatica as you are reading this, then you know exactly what it feels like to feel a sharp pain in your buttocks as you are working at our computer, the urge to get up and walk around to try to ease the pain in your lower back and leg, or the frustration of not being able to run up the stairs like you used to when trying to catch the train this morning and you can certainly forget about trying to tend to your beautiful garden this afternoon because you would not be able to get up off the stool if you tried.
