Just had a newborn 👶🏻 and you’re 🤔wondering if baby is doing what they should be doing 😬

😬Perhaps you are starting to have some concerns about your baby’s development or movement and thinking should you be seeing a Paediatrician 👩‍⚕️or a Paediatric Physiotherapist

If you answered Yes to the above statements, here’s a checklist of 5 things a newborn baby 👶🏻 should be able to do:
1. Baby should be able to grasp your finger when you place it into their palm.👐 While baby is lying on their back, you should notice baby demonstrate variable movements in their hands opening and closing them randomly.

2.When placed on their tummy, 👶🏻baby should be able to turn their head over to the side, clearing their nose from the surface that they are lying on. They may not lift their heads too high off the mat, however, they should be able to clear their noses from the mat and turn to either side.

3.When baby on their backs, baby should be moving their arms and legs off the mat. You should notice that 👶🏻baby moves both their arms and legs equally, bending and straightening their arms and legs against gravity.

4. Baby should have a variety of movement patterns their arms and legs rather than a few fixed movement patterns. So you should notice baby sometimes placing a hand to their mouth, or placing their arms by their side, sometimes kicking their legs up and sometimes kicking their legs into the bed.🤗

5. Baby should cry for their different needs, rather than be silent and sleepy all the time. You will soon learn baby’s different cries to indicate that baby is tired, or hungry 🍼or dirty. If baby does not make any sounds than it may be a concern.

If you notice that your baby is not doing the 5 things listed above, it may be worthwhile speaking to a Paediatrician or a Paediatric Physiotherapist about your baby.
