12 Nov CASE STUDY: Broken finger that just wouldn’t heal …until we made a customised Hand Splint
Have you or your teenager ever broken a finger while playing netball, basketball or cricket All it took was one awkward movement to pull a finger back in the wrong direction to cause a break in the bone.
When 13 year old Master S came to see us, he had broken his ring finger during a basketball match 5 days earlier. He had seen his Family GP who gave him a U-shaped splint to put over his ring finger and as referred to Physiotherapy for further management. When we saw him, he had pressure areas on his finger and palm where the over sized U-shaped splint was digging into his palm every time he moved his fingers. He had refused to wear the splint and came to physiotherapy with his middle and ring finger buddy taped together. Master S was experiencing a fair amount of pain at this point in time.
At the initial assessment with our Expert Physiotherapist, Master S was fully assessed and treatment commenced with Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound to help with bone healing and to reduce the swelling in his hand. A commercially prefabricated hand splint was recommended to him, however due to the cost of it, it was considered as non viable. So our Expert Physiotherapists decided to handmade a hand splint customized just for Master S to help stabilize his broken ring finger and give him effective pain relief. This worked effectively for Master S and he was soon on his way to recovery, while still having the freedom to use the rest of his fingers and hand for schoolwork!
