12 Nov Do you get cramps in your foot and calf muscles
Do you experience knee pain, hip pain or low back pain
If you answered Yes to the above statements , you might have tight calf muscles
Tight calf muscles often lead to reduced ankle range of movement affecting the way you walk, which in turn can cause knee pain, hip pain and low back pain. To check if you have tight calf muscles that limits your ankle range of movement, try squatting down low while keeping your heels down on the ground without losing your balance. If you cannot perform a low squat with your heels down and maintain your balance comfortably for 5 minutes, you have tight calf muscles that limits your ankle range of movement!
It is important to address the calf muscle tightness if you want to overcome your knee pain, hip pain or low back pain. Otherwise you are likely to find that no mattter what treatments you do for your knee pain, hip pain or low back pain, they keep coming back!
Here at My Favourite Physio, we use different treatment options to help our clients overcome their calf muscle tightness including Soft Tissue Massage, Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound, Radial Shockwave Therapy, Dry Needling and Stretching Exercises.
A great stretching exercise that you can try at home is standing on a step, place your feet half on the step and half off the step. Holding onto a support, slowly lower your heels down to feel a stretch in your calf muscles. Hold the stretch for 30seconds and repeat 2 more times. Rest for 1 minute and repeat for 2 more sets of 3 repetitions. Do this exercise as often as you can whenever you have access to a step.
