12 Nov Many Migraine and Headache sufferers experience neck pain during or leading up to an episode of Migraine or Headache attack.
So naturally to manage the neck pain, Migraine and Headache sufferers often get their necks treated and neck muscles worked on by a therapist who uses manual therapy like soft tissue massage or joint mobilisation including “cracking” their neck joints.
However, Migraine and Headache sufferers will commonly report that despite the massages and joint mobilisations and cracking, the Headaches and Migraines are still present with minor or no changes. Which leads to their conclusion that manual therapy did not work! However they have made wrong conclusion !
The problem is that the therapist, using manual therapy, is often only treating the neck pain and NOT the underlying cause of Headaches and Migraines which is due to increased brainstem sensitisation! This increase in brainstem sensitisation can only be addressed with specialised training which includes manual therapy to treat the first 3 joints of the neck. So what this means is that general manual therapy like soft tissue massage may help relief your neck pain BUT will not be able to help relief your Headaches and Migraines.
To effectively relief Headaches and Migraines, you need to see a specially trained Headache and Migraine Therapist, who can specifically treat the first 3 joints in your neck to help reduce the sensitisation in your brainstem!
