20 Jan Experiencing recurrent neck and shoulder pain that stops you from living an active lifestyle
Wondering why do you keep getting neck and shoulder pain, it is because of “old age”
If you answered Yes to the above statements, you are not alone. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists see many people with recurrent neck and shoulder pain. It is not uncommon for many of them to think that their neck and shoulder pain is a result of “old age”, when in reality, there are 3 common causes for neck and shoulder pain that can be treated to prevent recurrence.
1. Posture is the number 1 cause for recurrent neck and shoulder pain. The way you sit, stand and sleep often impacts on the muscles in your neck and shoulders which can lead to muscle tightness and pain. We spend many hours slouched over on our mobile devices scrolling through social media or working for hours typing away.
2. Constant overhead activity is the second common cause for recurrent neck and shoulder pain. Painters, carpenters, housewives who are constantly performing activities that require them to lift their arms over their head height tend to experience neck and shoulder muscle tightness and pain more often.
3. Stress and tension is another common cause for recurrent neck and shoulder pain. With daily unexpected challenges that can come our way each day, you may find yourself stressed and holding a lot of tension in your shoulders.
The key to overcoming these 3 Common causes for neck and shoulder pain is firstly, managing the muscle tightness and joint stiffness that has built up over time. Secondly, correcting our posture in sitting, standing and sleeping to prevent recurrent muscle tightness from building up each day. Thirdly, elimination, modification or activity pacing when carrying out overhead activities. Finally, learning to manage stressful situations through behavioural cognitive strategies and relaxation techniques.
