Case Study: 15 year old with Erb’s Palsy
Erb palsy is a condition whereby there is paralysis of the muscles of the upper arm and shoulder girdle due to an injury to the upper part of the brachial plexus nerves to the arm.
Recently, here at My Favourite Physio, we had the opportunity to work with a lovely 15 year old who presented with a complex case of Erb’s Palsy.
Master S presented to physiotherapy with Erb’s Palsy and injury sustained from a traumatic birth delivery. Unfortunately, Master S had no prior intervention since birth resulting in his left shoulder joint being left untreated in a dislocated position. Now at 15 years old, he was struggling to raise the arm up past 90 degrees. Our Expert Physiotherapists carried out a detailed examination, to determined that the shoulder joint deformity was a result of calcification in the shoulder because the shoulder joint was left in a dislocated position since birth. Fortunately, the muscle imbalance in the muscles of the spine and shoulders could still be re-trained and re-developed.
Following the shoulder rehabilitation program designed by our Expert Physiotherapist, Master S worked hard for 12 weeks to achieve improved alignment of his shoulder and spine.
The photo on the left was taken at the start and the photo on the right was taken after the 12 weeks Physiotherapy intervention. As you can see, the lower back spine is more aligned and the shoulders are more level. Repetition of exercises, postural corrections and customised garment Orthosis all contributed to the improved alignment of the shoulder and spine.
Master S achieved an increase in his left shoulder range of motion and is standing with improved posture and alignment, leading to an increase in confidence and function.
This case highlights the importance of appropriate diagnosis, education and intensive intervention to overcome a shoulder dysfunction. The key to success is hard work, persistence and education!
