Been thinking about treating yourself at home with a Massage Gun instead of seeing an Expert Physiotherapist
Wondering what’s the difference between the Massage Guns you have at home and the Radial Shockwave Therapy machines that Physiotherapists use in clinic
Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists are often asked by patients, “What’s the difference between the Massage Gun I have at home and the Radial Shockwave Machine you have in the clinic?”
The major difference between Radial Shockwave Therapy and Massage Gun is:
1. Radial Shockwave Therapy Machine uses Radial Shockwave energy to treat muscle dysfunction by reducing joint and soft tissue inflammation and promoting soft tissue recovery. It is a scientific evidence based treatment modality. Each machine costs $20k -$25k and is only available to Allied Healthcare Professionals. A Massage Gun uses mechanical energy that physically hits the muscle tissue to release muscle tightness, almost like a meat tenderiser. The evidence to support its efficacy is not based on scientific evidence based research, so it’s not clear how it promotes physiological recovery of muscles. A Massage Gun may cost $50-$1000 and is easily available to anyone without any healthcare training.
2. When using Radial Shockwave Therapy, an Expert Physiotherapist carries our a full assessment to determine the cause of your pain and then determines the correct treatment strategies to help you overcome your pain to get you back to active living. While Massage Guns are used by people at home who simply direct it to where they feel their pain is, at an intensity that is dependent on the Massage Gun model they have. The lack of awareness and knowledge of muscle conditions and medical contradictions can make the use of Massage Gun unsafe for some people.
So if you are experiencing soft tissue injuries, it’s best to speak to an Expert Physiotherapist before using a Massage Gun.
