Got ankle pain but didn’t fall over twisting or spraining your ankle
Wondering why you are experiencing ankle pain whenever you walk uphills or on stairs
Perhaps you have been told that there’s nothing wrong with your ankle and it’s just old age causing your ankle pain
If you answered yes to any of the above statements, then rest assured, you aren’t imagining things and you aren’t alone! Everyone can understand ankle pain following a trauma causing an ankle sprain. However, there are also many other times when you can experience ankle pain without a trauma like a fall or a sporting injury.
More gradual onsets of ankle pain can be caused by:
Chronic ankle instability from past incidents of ankle sprains. This is often a result of soft tissue scarring when the original ankle sprain was not correctly treated.
Ankle Tendonitis around the ankle. The major muscles around your lower leg form tendons around the ankle joint. These tendons are all responsible for control and stability of the ankle joint. When the muscles and tendons are overworked through repetitive walking, running or prolonged standing, it can result in a swollen and stiff ankle with certain directions of movement more painful than others.
Nerve related Injuries. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a condition that occurs when the posterior tibial nerve is compressed. This is a large nerve that runs down the back to the side of the lower leg and passes behind the inside ankle bone. People with tarsal tunnel syndrome with often complain of pain and numbness on the outside portion of the bottom of the foot.
As you can see ankle pain can be due to different reasons and not always a result of ankle sprains. This means that getting the correct diagnosis is crucial in your road to recovery.
