Is your child complaining that their backpack is cutting into their shoulder each day and causing them neck pain. Noticed that your child gets neck pain at the end of the day when they have to lug a heavy backpack for the day
Perhaps you are wondering why your child keeps getting neck and shoulder pain on one side
If that sounds like your child, then you probably need to reconsider what kind of bag your child is carrying, how they are carrying it and how to address the existing neck pain that they are currently experiencing.
Here at My Favourite Physio, we offer School Backpack Assessments for school age children as part of any assessment of neck or back pain.
Here’s 3 Top Tips that you can try at home yourself:
1. Help your child pack their backpack with only the essentials. For example, instead fo carrying 48 colouring pencils, bring only 12 colouring pencils. Check their bags each day to ensure that they only pack what is needed each day. The weight of their bag should only be 10% of their body weight.
2. When choosing a backpack , pick one with a separate laptop compartment that allows your child to place their laptop at the back of their backpack. When packing their bag, place heavier items closer to the back of the backpack, where it is nearest to their spine so that it exerts the least strain on their lower back. Wear both straps on their backpack to ensure that the weight of their backpack is distributed evenly.
3. Encourage your child to do regular neck stretches to prevent muscle tightness in their neck and shoulders. Check their posture to make sure that they are not slouching when they are standing as that will place more stress on the front of their shoulders and make the neck and shoulder muscles work harder just to keep them upright.
