Wondering if your child has autism because the childcare workers have mentioned their concerns
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, an estimated 205,200 Australians had autism in 2018, over 3% of children aged 5-14 years are diagnosed autistic with “males were 3.5 times more likely than females to [be autistic]”. Autism spectrum disorder (also simply termed autism) is a persistent developmental disorder, characterised by symptoms evident from early childhood. There is no definitive test for autism; instead, diagnosis is made on the basis of developmental assessments and behavioural observations.
Here are the 3 key criteria for determining Autism:
1. Lack of social reciprocity. This means that the child is not aware of other people as persons with feelings. they often view people as a tool to get to things. They will come to you and grab your hand as a tool to help them get what want but not ask you for help.
2. Speech and language delay. Often a child with autism will lack communication skills including eye contact, ability to turn take when playing, delayed verbal speech and language skills.
3. Odd behaviours. This means that a child has peculiar behaviours such as lining up all their toys when playing, having fixed routines that limits their ability to handle any change, copying phrases from movies they watch but yet cannot put two words together to request for help.
To have a diagnosis of Autism, a child needs to fulfil ALL the 3 key criteria, especially the first criteria of lacking social reciprocity.
