Is your teenager complaining of knee pain especially after sports

Is your teenager complaining of knee pain especially after sports 🏐🏀
Is your child limping off the field after a game ⚽️
Have you noticed a bump forming in the front of their knee that is tender to touch 😣

If you have answered yes to any of the above statements, then your child 🧒 might have Osgood–Schlatter Disease (OSD). Osgood-Schlatter Disease is a common cause of knee pain in growing teenagers. It is an inflammation of the area just below the knee where the tendon from the kneecap attaches to the shinbone. When a child is active, the quadriceps muscles 🦵pull on the kneecap tendon which in turn, pulls on the shinbone. In some children, this repetitive pull on the shinbone leads to inflammation of the growth plate. Eventually a bony bump, at the front of the shinbone under the kneecap forms. This bony bump is where the child reports to be painful to touch and the source of their knee pain.😣 OSD often occurs during growth spurts, when bones, muscles, tendons, and other structures are changing rapidly.

Painful symptoms are often brought on by running, 🏃🏼‍♀️jumping, and other sports-related activities. In some cases, both knees have symptoms, although one knee may be worse than the other. Symptoms of OSD include knee pain, tenderness and swelling at the front of the knee, and muscles tightness in the front or back of the thigh.

Treatment for OSD focuses on reducing pain and swelling. This typically requires limiting exercise activity until your child can enjoy activity without discomfort or significant pain afterwards. Physiotherapy 🤓is very effective for treating and managing OSD, and treatment strategies include Dynamic Taping, Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound, Radial Shockwave Therapy, Soft Tissue Massage, Activity Pacing, Stretching and Strengthening Exercises. 🦵
