Wondering if you’ve got Runner’s Knee that is preventing you from peak performance
Runner’s knee refers to one of two common repetitive strain injuries of the knee, either iliotibial band syndrome (ITB) or patellofemoral syndrome (PFPS). Both usually affect runners, triathletes, hikers and serious walkers.
It can be tricky to tell which type of Runner’s Knee you have. So here is a quick checklist to help you figure out which type of runner’s knee you have.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)
1. Pain is on the side of the knee.
2. Pain is worse going down hill or down stairs,
3. Pain tends to come on quickly over a few hours or a day,
4. Doing a squat does not cause knee pain,
5. Sitting does not tend to aggravate your knee pain unless you are sitting for longer than 1 hour.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)
1. Pain is on the front of the knee, around and under the kneecap.
2. Pain is worse going uphill or climbing up stairs.
3. Pain tends to come on gradually over months.
4. Doing a squat causes knee pain,
5. Sitting aggravates your knee pain and your knee pain is worse when standing up From sitting than sitting down
Sometimes you can have both types of Runner’s Knee but usually it is more common to have Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS).
